7/16/2010 KINGSTON TO ALBANY

Back into the Hudson and continuing our voyage North we passed under the Kingston/Rhinebeck Bridge and began to see the fabulous mansions that are scattered along the shore. This first mansion was just past the bridge on the east side of the Hudson and we fantasized that they were setting up for “Chelsea’s” upcoming wedding. But that was just our story!

TENT, MANSION, HUGE LAWN FOR THE CROWDS?  MAYBE NOT!
(Note: Barbara thinks this may be the Astor Estate)

We were able to successfully identify the 1869 Esopus Creek Lighthouse at the entrance to the Saugerties harbor and the lovely old Claremont Estate, home of seven generations of the Livingston family. Chancellor Robert Livingston was a negotiator of the Louisiana and worked with Fulton to invent the first practical steamboat.

Just before passing under the Rip Van Winkle Bridge we spied the spectacular Olana, the 19th-century edifice that was once home to Frederic Church of the Hudson River School artist of fame.

The Hudson/Athens Lighthouse is built on a shoal that was the scene of the 1845 wreck of the steamboat Swallow in which 50 of the 300 passengers onboard were killed. Good idea to have a warning beacon there!!

This “big Ass Barge” (to quote Dan) lumbered by us going towards New York as we passed Shady Harbor Marina. Sort of dwarfs the docked boats.

We soon were motoring past the Lafarge site where many of the Querrey Industrial employees have worked. Nice to see business going on.

JAKE, DID YOU WORK ON THIS HOPPER?

A nice little rain storm cooled things down slightly but it was still hot and muggy as we pulled into the Port of Albany and headed to our dockage at the little Albany Yacht Club. Ed, we are right down from the retired Naval ship you visited on one of your trips back to Vermont. We fueled up before tying to our dockage and had pizza delivered. I couldn’t even do that at home!!

ED, REMEMBER THIS BABY?

After dinner, Charles tried his hand at fishing with the pizza crust and leftover olives. There is no telling what will attract a catfish!!!

HAPPY CHARLES!
