7/10/2010 FAIRHAVEN, CT TO NOANK, CT (MYSTIC)

SKY ART FOR TODAY

Dan was back at work this morning and had the oil and filters changed in both engines and was ready to pull out by 10:30. The sky was already lightly misting but the weather forecast showed the possibility of some nasty stuff ahead. We slid through the ingenious Hurricane Barrier that protects the inner harbor from storm surges. This huge stone structure, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1965, creates a wonderful safe haven for numerous boaters during all seasons.

HURRICANE BARRIER

We experienced stormy skies and choppy seas until we were well passed Point Judith, RI.

Once we rounded the point at Watch Hill and entered the protected waters of Fishers Island the waters became glass smooth. The contrast between last Saturday’s trip from Mystic in the blistering heat and today’s relatively cool passage was a totally welcomed change.

CALM, CALM

LATIMER REEF LIGHTHOUSE

We entered the Mystic River and docked at Noank Shipyard where we took on fuel and tied up for the night with the assistance of their most helpful staff. As we were approaching the dock we noticed that we had a little rope “tail” and Joe, the dock master, called someone to check out our “catch”. Luckily, he was available, arriving with fins and mask. Within a few minutes Jay had untangled the ropes from our prop, checked out the condition of our zincs and shafts and was back up on the dock.

Richard Feingold, you will be happy to know that we are right next to Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough and enjoyed their wonderful chowder and famous “hot lobster rolls” before wandering back to the Quest. Dan spent the rest of the evening listening to his NASCAR on the XM Radio while Steven, who has fallen victim to my Kindle, delved into the adventures of Daniel Silva’s protagonist, Gabriel Allon.

  1. It was really nice meeting you guys Saturday night by Abbott's. The ice cream in Mystic was heavenly! My friends & I (and the puppy) got back to NYC about 1am. Enjoy the rest of your journey and maybe I'll see you at the US Open. :)
