1/1/2011 STARTING THE NEW YEAR IN KEY WEST

SATURDAY

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY: 0 NM

Dan began the New Year by reattaching all of our country flags, topping the mast with the Conch Republic Flag. It seems that the disgruntled citizens of the Keys decided to secede from the Union in protest of the debilitating road block set up by the US. Border Patrol. On April 23, 1982 the mayor and supporting troops met at Mallory Square, read their Secession Proclamation and proceeded to enact their symbolic rebellion by breaking a loaf of stale Cuban over the head of someone dressed in a US Naval uniform. After the “one minute” rebellion the Conch Republic prime minister (aka The Mayor) surrendered to the Admiral in charge of the Key West Naval Base and demanded 1 Billion dollars in foreign aid and War Relief to rebuild the poor, battle scared little nation.

We started the New Year off with a great breakfast back at Sandy’s Cafe with some scrumptious El Pastor in our quesadillas and burrito. YUMMY!

We picked up rental bikes and took off so our three Cali guests could see the Southernmost Point and then we made a quick market stop before commencing our afternoon “bicycle pup crawl”.

Our first stop was at Sloppy Joe’s where Black and Skabuddah were entertaining the audience. Next we peddled the short distance to Captain Tony’s where Brad Paul was wrapping up his bawdy routine. OMG! He definitely pushed it to the edge, well no; he boldly crossed over that edge.

A quick stop at the Bull Bar found this local tipping a Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer, just like Poppy (Grandpa Querrey) used to enjoy. Ah, the good ole days! Neither Jan nor Dan would drink one for old time sake.

PBR BEER

I guess no trip to Key West could be considered complete without a visit to Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville . With that chore out of the way, we headed to the Sunset Pier. Unfortunately, we were slightly tardy for the main attraction (sunset) but Dan and Debi made their own whoopee on the dance floor.
