9/8/2010 FRANKFORT AND A DAY WITH LESS WIND

WEDNESDAY

Finally, we woke to find that the wind and waves here in Frankfort, MI had dissipated to a tolerable level and the sun was trying to peek out from the clouds. Boaters and townies we crawling out from the windblown litter and piles of sand from the Lake Michigan shore. We, once again, readjusted our lines and paid for another night. It is OK here in the little Betsie Lake but the big pond outside will take a while to settle down. We have visions of traveling on south tomorrow.

We made a trek to the market and hardware store then returned to make more applesauce. It makes the boat smell so good while it is cooking on the stove!

A bevy of swans swam our way and amused us with their antics: bathing, dunking their heads in search of food and chasing off possible poachers. We always think of geese as being big but they were dwarfed by the grandiose swans as they observed from a safe distance.

In the afternoon we walked to the Lake Michigan beach area and watched tractors with bucket loaders laboring to move the huge drifts of sand off the streets and beach walkways. Homeowners were shoveling sand off their sidewalks and driveways while gardeners were busy picking up downed tree branches and leaves. It was reminiscent of a snow storm only not quite so cold.

Summer is over and things are settling into the “fall” mode with tourists vacating the rentals, shop owners cutting back their hours and potted mums showing up on front doorsteps. It is coming!!
