62 NM TRAVELED
After
returning our weekend Enterprise car (such a deal at $35.00 Friday to Monday),
the Quest cast off her lines and left Dockside just after 8:00 AM. While the skies were by no means sunny, the
rain was a past thing and the winds were definitely within our traveling
range. We traveled past our Southeast
Harbor boat dock, through Snow’s Cut, down the mighty Cape Fear River and back
into the ICW channel. Yes, we were all
happy to be back on the water!
The pounding
waters and shifting sands brought on by Sandy left their mark but all in all
things were might fine. We did, however,
have one little glitch around 1:30.
Between aid-to-navigation markers 80 and 81 in the Shallotte Inlet area,
Quest almost ran aground. We did do some hoping and skipping across the
very shallow, shoaled, sandy bottom but Dan managed to keep us going until we
cleared the area. I think our newly painted
bottom will have a few scratches to show for this adventure.
Before 5:00
Quest was tied up to Barefoot Landing Marina in Myrtle Beach, SC. Dan and Richard gave her a quick wash-off
while Charlene and I made the visit to the dock-master to register then
contributed a little to South Carolina’s economy by visiting the shops. You know, we girls have to do our part!!
While we
have been extremely fortunate here, Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy made her might
known as she made her way north and slammed into land near New Jersey and New
York. Lives have been lost, homes washed
away, airports deserted and under water, power lines down, mass transit
suspended, schools canceled and feet of early snow piled up inland where the
storm took on a whole different face.
Our hearts go out to all those affected.
