THURSDAY 11/01/2012 CHARLESTON TO BEAUFORT, SC

55 NM

This morning we found our washer was on the fritz so we took a little time to use the nice facilities at the Mega Dock before heading south on the waterways of South Carolina.

It was a day of twisting through the windy rivers and gazing over the low country.  I was happy to see my favorite house still standing as we exited the Elliott Cut.  We travelled through such charmingly named rivers as the Edisto, the Ashepoo, the Coosaw and the Brickyard Creek before arriving at our destination in lovely Beaufort, SC.

Beaufort, the second oldest city behind Charleston in South Carolina, was chartered in 1711.  The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is located just 3 miles NW of the town and is home to six Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet attack squadrons and one Navy F/A-18fighter squadron.  We witnessed several planes buzzing by as we docked.

During our evening stroll around the charming town we saw several of the West Indies style homes that are built over high basements with sprawling verandas.  The town has been the filming location of The Prince of Tides, The Great Santini, The Big Chill and G.I. Jane.
