4/6/2011 LAKE WORTH TO FORT PIERCE CITY MARINA

WEDNESDAY

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY: 43 NM

DOCKED AT: FORT PIERCE CITY MARINA  ICW MILE MARKER: 965

SUNRISE: 7:07      SUNSET: 7:39

HIGH: 85               LOW: 69

TODAY’S 5 BRIDGE OPENINIGS:

1. PARKER BRIDGE

2. PGA BLVD. BRIDGE

3. JUPITER FEDERAL BRIDGE

4. 707 BRIDGE

5. HOBE SOUND BRIDGE

Pulling up anchor in Lake Worth we somehow managed to snag a trap line but it didn’t slow us down and gave Dan something to look forward to. Always something! We keyed up our radio and alerted the Parker Bridge tender of our intentions to catch his 9:15 opening and slipped right through.

Just after passing the Jupiter Federal Bridge we made a sharp right towards the Jupiter Inlet then a hard left to continue our ICW journey. The channel became dramatically wider with civilization in residence on one side and the Hobe National Wildlife Refuge on the other.

Dan dropped the anchor in Hobe (Ho-bay) Sound, just off green aid to navigation marker 43, and swam down to clear the offending rope that we picked up in Lake Worth. The little bit of rope that Dan retrieved proved to be hardly worth the effort. We are beginning to see nesting osprey again. We so enjoyed watching them last year.

At red aid to navigation marker 34 the USCG was working at retrieving a wayward marker from the mud and shoaling. I’m sure they are kept busy trying to keep everything “ship-shape” in this ever-changing ICW and we boaters are all grateful.

Just south of the huge South Bridge in Fort Pierce we made a hard left to enter the marked channel into the City Marina’s convenient facilities. Boy, it was a battle to get Quest spun around and backed into the slip with wind wanting to dictate our path. Dan, of course, did a masterful job that earned him kudos from the helpful dock master.

Walking back to Quest after checking in at the office we discovered two manatees lurking near a docked boat in the marina. We had heard many tales of them visiting marinas but this was our first sighting. We watched their slow maneuvers with rapt attention. Wow!
