The park rangers in their little panga finally paid Quest a visit to collect the $100 peso/person park fee. We received minimal directions (in Spanish) to the nearest cave and headed that way after morning chores.
Las Haitises National Park encompasses more than 300 square miles and is home to a large variety of marine birds, an outstanding mangrove, endangered and endemic Hutia as well as numerous caves. We visited the San Gabriel Cave located not far from our anchorage.
Our helpful Spanish speaking guide ushered us through the subterranean world with chandeliers of stalactites cling to the ceiling while the ever reaching stalagmites groped to attain their goal. The original Native Americans left messages for us to uncover in the forms of petroglyphs etched into the limestone interiors of the caves. Beachfront living at its finest, way back in the dark ages.

DAN'S SEA BEAN HAUL FOR TODAY. JUST UNBELIEVABLE! |
The frequent and intermittent rain showers keep us well supplied with rainbows. Tonight we were treated to a spectacular double rainbow that extended from one side of the bay to the other.
