THUNDERBOLT MARINA TO ANCHOR BEHIND ST. SIMONS ISLAND

FRIDAY

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY: 75 NM

ANCHORED BEHIND ST. SIMONS ISLAND ON FREDERICA RIVER ABOUT MM 672

SUNRISE AT THUNDERBOLT MARINA: 7:08 AM

SUNSET AT ST. SIMONS ISLAND: 5:23 PM

The dockmaster must be an early riser because he delivered Krispy Kreme donuts to our door before we pulled out at 7:00 this morning! This was a good stopping place with a nice laundry facility, an accommodating Enterprise Car Rental nearby, marine stores and a good restaurant within walking distance, Savannah only minutes away and donuts delivered to your doorway.

DEPARTING EARLY ,WE WATCHED THE SUN RISE AS WE TRAVELED

Wending our way through the waterways of the lovely Georgian Lowcountry, we got acquainted with the bordering islands. St. Catherine’s Island is home to the St. Catherine’s Island Foundation of Survival, a center that works with the NY Zoological Society in an effort to help the survival of endangered species. Blackbeard’s Island is surrounded by stories of treasure hidden by Tech and his men. Nothing has ever been unearthed to support this legend but the bordering waters sure sparkled like precious gems. These 5,618 acres was decreed as a National Wildlife Preserve in 1940 by President Woodrow Wilson and is only accessible by water. St. Simeon Island is the site of Georgia’s first military outpost, Fort Frederica. On the island’s ocean side you can find the five-star Cloister Hotel.

THE SPARKLING WATERS IN FRONT OF BLACKBEARD'S ISLAND

Tonight Quest found a peaceful anchorage up the Frederica River but we will be trying out our new “anchor monitor” (aka baby monitor) that we purchased at Target yesterday. Thanks Garth and Kathy for this great suggestion!

We were rewarded for our long travel day with a blazing sunset.
