6/7/2011 ROCKHALL, MD THROUGH THE C&D CANAL TO GREENWICH, NJ

TUESDAY

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY: 73 NM

DOCKED AT: GREENWICH MARINA BOATWORKS

GREENWICH, NJ ON THE COHANSEY RIVER OFF THE DELAWARE BAY

SUNRISE: 5:39 SUNSET: 8:24

HIGH: 89 LOW: 64

Another beautiful, sunny and hot day just made for traveling on the water. With all the doors and windows wide open we began to hear an occasional “boom” in the distance from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. This is the nation’s oldest proving grounds and was established in 1917 for the design and testing of ordnance materials.

By 1:30 we had passed Chesapeake City and entered the C&D Canal (Chesapeake and Delaware) with the lush Canal Wildlife Refuge on our port and clear sailing ahead. This canal first opened in 1829, is 14 miles long, 450’ wide, 35’ deep and now carries 40% of all ship traffic in and out of the busy Port of Baltimore. I guess Tuesday is a slow day as we only encountered one barge and tug during our short transit.

After exiting the canal we were in the great Delaware Bay with Delaware on the west shore and Jew Jersey on the eastern shore. This relatively shallow bay can sometimes be quite rough but we enjoyed a calm crossing to the Cohansey River entrance on the NJ side. Just after entering the river we were “wowed” by first one bald eagle then another setting on signs at the river’s edge.

Tonight we docked at little Greenwich Marina and Boatworks up the Cohansey River. Quiet, calm and peaceful! Can this possibly be New Jersey??
