2/4/2011 LITTLE FARMERS CAY

FIVE “F” CELEBRATION FARMERS FIRST FRIDAY IN FEBRUARY FESTIVAL

FRIDAY

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY:  0 NM

This lovely little island was originally settled by Christina Nixon, a freed slave, and her two sons along with Eve Brown. Their descendants now populate Little Farmers. And yes, everyone is somehow related to the Nixons! Roosevelt Nixon owns the yacht club, and his cousin, Terry Bain, owns Ocean’s Cabins and is the originator of the Five “F”, now in its 25th year.

Our busy day started out when the big ferry pulled up next to us at the dock and the fun began as we watched them unload 100 passengers, tons of food, even more beer, one of the little “C” class sail boats for today’s race, a Ford pickup truck and the recently rescued and adopted goat.

THE FERRY AND QUEST

PEOPLE BEGAN POURING OUT OF THE FERRY
It was truly amazing watching them lift the truck up and lower it onto the way too narrow dock. They first put a length of 2”X10” down to widen the dock just in front of Quest, had us move our bow back just a bit, put a sling under the truck’s wheels, hooked up to the crane and swung the truck out and onto the dock. We were all holding our breath and gawking at the show.

NO OSHA HERE

This baby goat had been stranded up a tree during a wind storm and rescued by one of the ferry workers. He now thrives as their mascot and is growing stronger as his legs heal and he gains weight.

CAPTAIN THE BABY GOAT

Today’s activities took place at both Ocean Cabin and the airport. Ocean Cabin, in town, had food and craft booths along with all the requisite silly games designed to pull in the cruisers. Out at the airport we watched the two races and ate some pretty good food while the DJ spun some loud and rhythmic island music. Somehow Will from the Vermont boat, Wings, managed to get a spot on the Thunderbird that came over on the ferry. They won both of today’s races and he is flying on a cloud. What fun it was to chase along behind the little “C” class boats as they zipped across the waters.

After a day in the sun, the cruisers gathered at the Yacht Club for the evening of impromptu music provided by several of the boaters. Dan and Larry started the evening off when they blew the conch shells at sunset then Scott on Painkiller played Amazing Grace on his bagpipes from the top of Quest. That was truly a “show stopper”! Roosevelt’s little bar was crammed with cruisers eating, drinking, chatting and enjoying the fine music. The perfect ending to a delightful day.
