FRIDAY
TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY: 0 NM
It was Quiet today without Kurt and KelLe but it quickly became a work day. Dan spent quite a bit of time searching out the hard-to-find engine oil for the Quest oil change while I started laundry and struggled with the Blog. The blog is being a bit cantankerous while they are trying to up-grade some features. I am sure it will all make it better but right now, I am finding it almost impossible to add captions for the photos.
Kirt and KelLe sent us this photo to announce their safe arrival at the Albany Airport parking lot.
We, once again, borrowed the van and found our way to the obscure little Newcomb Oil Co. that had the perfect oil for our needs, stopped at a Nappa Auto Parts for the necessary filters then made a quick visit to the Kroger Market before returning to begin the dirty deed of changing the oil. On our drive back we saw several boats waiting for passage at the Kentucky Lock and wondered if Sea Estate, N II Wishin or Ocean Breeze might be among those there. The timeing should be just about right.
By 5:30 Dan had finished with the oil change, the groceries were all stowed, laundry was done and the beds were made up with clean linens. A good day’s work done and time for showers and some relaxation!
Our night’s entertainment began with the mile walk from the marina to Patti’s 1880 Settlement Restaurant (www.pattis-settlement.com) in nearby Grand Rivers. Everyone from the boater’s guide books to Fern at Hoppei’s Marina had given it high marks so we thought “Why not?” It was kind of a cross between the old Knott’s Berry Farm Chicken Dinner Restaurant, a Cracker Barrel and a Clearman’s Restaurant. There was a gift shop, a miniature golf course, an arcade, remote control boats, a water wheels and, well, just plain old good food.
Dan had their special 2” pork chop and I went for the catfish (hoping the entire time that it didn’t come from the Mississippi River waters).
Even though we brought home more than half of our dinner, we forced ourselves to try their Famous Sawdust Pie. Mighty tasty folks, mighty tasty. Here is Patti‘s recipe for the Famous Sawdust Pie:
7 egg whites unbeaten
1.5 Cups granulated sugar
1.5 Cups graham cracker crumbs
1.5 Cups chopped pecans
1.5 Cups shredded coconut
9” unbaked pie shell
Mix all ingredients together and stir by hand. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake in preheated 325 oven until glossy and set (about 25 to 30 minutes). DO NOT OVERBAKE! Serve warm with sliced bananas and whipped cream. Yum!
We were glad to make the walk back to Quest and kept up a good pace to keep warm. The day was hot and sunny but the temperature dropped to around 60 by the time we headed back. Great sleeping weather!
