10/7/2010 ANCHORAGE AT TENSAS RIVER TO EASTERN SHORE MARINA IN MOBILE BAY

SUNDAY

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED TODAY: 50 NM

NO MORE LOCKS!!!

Again we woke to dense fog but, since we had no more locks to worry about and our day’s destination was not too far, it posed no problem to the anchored boats. After making all our clocks were synchronized to the new daylight savings time ,Squivot was the first out since they did need to reach their marina to begin repairs and allow their dogs to roam a bit. Today’s time change will bring darkness an hour early so the rest of us were off to Mobile before 8:30.

GANYMEDE AND FINALLY CLOAKED IN FOG

SQUIVOT RUSHING OFF TO MOBILE

We must be getting nearer to the ocean! We encountered scads of tows and barges along today’s journey and the gull population has once again descended upon us. Many fishing boats were rushing up the river to reach their favorite Sunday fishing spot and we began in earnest to look for “gators” along the shoreline. Dan has become possessed!!! We did spy a couple raccoons scrounging around on the banks and palm trees  but no gator.

SCARY STUFF ON THIS BARGE
CAN YOU SAY NUCLEAR?

A FEW SMALL PALMS ARE BEGINNING TO DOT THE LANDSCAPE

GULLS SOARING ABOVE

Bridges, bridges bridges – we got plenty of bridges today. It didn’t take much imagination to name Twin Bridges.

TWIN BRIDGES

At the I-90 Bridge we got a great view of the upcoming Mobile skyline then entered into tentacles of the upper Mobile Bay with its massive commerce ports. Even though NOAA’s morning weather report showed small craft warning with winds of 10 to 14, it was a glassy surface that we encountered as we cruised in around noon.

I 90 BRIDGE AND THE DISTANT MOBILE SKYLINE

Tugs and their barges trudged by, super tankers were taking on cargo or being off-loaded by the huge cranes, other ships were in dry-dock for repairs and scheduled maintenance. The woven conveyors at this mammoth coal distribution center reminded me of a "gigundus" roller coaster.

DRY DOCK

When we passed the beautiful Mobile Convention Center we officially passed from the Lower Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway. So long old friend, hope to see your water’s again someday.

MOBILE CONVENTION CENTER

We followed Ganymede and Finally across the open waters of the bay and into Eastern Shore Marina, our home for the next couple of days. Twisting and tweaking, the three of us managed to get docked at this cute little marina. Sleeping Bear came in later and we are all going to dinner at the Yacht Club that abuts our marina.

OUR DINNER PARTY AT THE YACHT CLUB

Although I thoroughly loved cruising on the river, I am so glad to be back to the sea and watching the sun setting over the waters of the Gulf. I could hardly drag myself from the ever changing, spectacular sight of the evening sky.
